What’s a Holter monitor?

FCI & AKC Doberman kennel "HEAVEN PROGENY" proudly announce our of the first official HOLTER MONITORING FOR DOGS FROM PUERTO RICO.

The Holter monitor, named after its inventor Dr. Norman J. Holter, is a cutting-edge device that provides invaluable insights into the intricate rhythm of a Doberman's heart. This unobtrusive apparatus, akin to a watchful guardian, quietly records and analyzes the heart’s electrical activity over an extended period.

With each beat captured and analyzed, the Holter monitor offers a window into the depths of a Doberman's and some other’s breeds cardiac function, empowering us to detect irregularities that may otherwise remain concealed.

The main duty of each breeder and owner is to protect well-being of our beloved Dobermans and other breeds, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. Holter monitor - an impressive tool that allows us to confirm the health of the our beloved dogs and producers, as well as to diagnose DCM disease at an early stage in any dog.

What's DCM?

Dobermans are a breed that is genetically predisposed to a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). DCM is a progressive disease that affects the heart muscle, causing it to become enlarged and weakened. It can lead to irregular heart rhythms, heart failure, and potentially sudden cardiac death. In a study surveying Dobermans elder 6 years of age, 44% of dogs were affected. If Dobermans of all ages were assessed then 58% had signs of disease. It was reported that both male and female dogs were equally affected although males tended to show signs of disease at an earlier age. Unfortunately, not only Dobermans are prone to this disease, but also some breeds at increased risk of developing DCM include: - Great Dane -Irish Wolfhound -Scottish Deerhound -Boxer -Large breed dogs, in general -American Cocker Spaniel (associated with nutritional deficiency) -Portuguese Water Dog (juvenile form) DCM is generally divided into two phases: 1. An occult phase, during which time disease is present but dogs remain asymptomatic. This phase can last months to years. 2. An overt clinical phase, when clinical signs develop.

Why does my dog need a Holter?

Why does My Dog need a Holter?

First of all, we believe that each breeding program must be based only on health tested producers. Holter monitoring is a part of the big world of strong healthy bloodlines, which must be done annually including some other heart tests as ECHO, Troponin, NTproBNP in combining with genetic tests, for sure.
Secondly, early detection and monitoring of heart health are essential to identify any signs of DCM and initiate appropriate interventions to manage the condition effectively.
